Antique Saw Mill Assembly

We’ve acquired an antique sawmill from the town of Smithers and are looking for volunteers to help assemble in on our grounds this spring.

HISTORY OF THE MILL
Built in 1938 by John Shilby of the Bulky Valley, this type of sawmill was used in Shilby's birthplace of Switzerland, as a semi-portable mill in remote alpine regions.

The carriage wheels, bunks, and carriage transport mechanisms were imported from a Swiss firm. The rest of the machinery was constructed from local materials scavenged and adapted with the assistance of a local welder. John Shilby’s son Louis helped in the construction of the mill and operated it until 1949 when it was sold to Anton Goof, a farmer and logger from Telkwa BC.

The mill has had many owners, who have maintained, modified and improved aspects of it’s machinery.

In 1992 it was purchased from Mr. Shippers of Dougherty, BC by Archibald Earley and William McRae of Terrace BC, who restored it to working condition. In 2003 they gifted it to the town of Smithers, where a group a volunteers worked to transport and assemble it to use as a working exhibit of forestry history.
